About the Collaborative

The Education Collaborative is an effort of the Santa Maria section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Oil & Gas Industry to support the academic efforts of teachers and students in the Central Coast area.

The Goals

The overall goal of this project is to effectively partner with the schools in our community to enhance the learning process while championing math and science curricula.

The Components

Contests

Poster & PowerPoint

An Oil & Gas theme will provide the foundation for students and teachers to create graphic presentations (traditional art murals and electronic PowerPoint) for contest entry.

Lesson Plan & Activity

Teachers will vie for awards by submitting a photo and written documentary of their favorite math or science lesson plan. A resource guide containing Oil & Gas curriculum, correlated to California standards, is available upon request.

Curriculum Integration

Scholarship Fund

Teachers and/or administrators will communicate their needs in a grant request to the scholarship committee on a quarterly basis throughout a calendar year.

Volunteerism

Representatives from SPE and/or the Industry will take an active role in the classroom by participating in career days, guest speaking roles and/or other planned activities.

Enrichment Opportunities

SPE Santa Maria Chapter will utilize its collective knowledge to connect teachers and students to organizations/special opportunities/activities that will enrich the learning process (i.e. offshore platform tours, teacher workshops, museums, etc.).

Dinner & Awards Ceremony

SPE members, the Oil & Gas Industry, teachers and dignitaries will celebrate success at an awards and showcase dinner in November 2009.
